Scottish Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

With views over the Grampians, this property makes a perfect base for a romantic retreat.

Set on a Highland estate spanning 4500 acres with hills rising to 2500ft, these four holiday properties are situated on the edge of the Cairngorms National Park with a wild flower reserve nearby, and an abundance of wildlife including ospreys and huge herds of deer. For 300 years Cistercian Monks spent half of each year at this peaceful place, making butter and cheese and brewing beer from the pure springs that continue to feed the houses. Delightful 18th-century Clover Cottage is reached from its parking area via a short track across a stream. With its own large garden with views towards the great massif of the Grampians. Claypotts is a charming 18th-century cottage, is in an utterly peaceful glen at the heart of the estate with its own enclosed garden on the banks of the River Isla. Croft End Cottage, a 15th-century cottage lies secluded behind double hedges and is a romantic yet fabulously comfortable place perfect for explorers, lovers and honeymooners. Brewlands Cottage is a 17th-century, cosy, very comfortable property in a lovely riverside location with fishing from the garden and views of high hills and surrounding quiet countryside. There are ancient wild flower meadows with rare wild yellow violets and orchids. Red squirrels live around the gardens and the walls support rare ferns and lichens which grow only in unpolluted places. Walking from the door of each cottage. Excellent golf courses at St Andrews, Carnoustie, Gleneagles and Rosemount. Glenshee ski resort is 35 minutes, as is Pitlochry with its theatre, restaurants and kilt and cashmere shops. An adventure centre 20 minutes away, with pony trekking at Balmoral Estate and many castles and stately homes to visit: Balmoral, Glamis, Blair Atholl, Scone Palace and Braemar. Visit the famous Whisky Trail. Riding centre 6 miles. The oldest tree in Europe is in Fortingall, 1 hour. Shops 12 miles, pub 2 miles.

Spacious beamed living/dining room with cast-iron wood-burning stove. Well-equipped, modern farmhouse-style kitchen. Bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet. Open-tread, spiral stairs to first floor: Galleried double bedroom with 5ft bed and beams overlooking living room.

Very peaceful. The Cottage was clean and comfortable. Perfect location for walking etc. If you want entertainment then go elsewhere but if you are looking for a bolt hole away from it all, this fits the bill. There is a pub 2 Miles away which is very welcoming and serves very good food.

Great stay! Made to feel very welcome by Simon who couldn't do enough to help us. The property had everything we wanted and the hot tub was truly amazing!!!! Already planning our next stay!

A nice little cottage but a bit outdated in terms of equipment, microwave, toaster and kettle. Electric is charge on top and works out about £80 for a week. Electrics were also temperamental in the cottage and the bedside lights didn't work nor did the utility room. No outside lights over hot tub or leading round to it so it's a clamber in the dark and it's not at all sheltered by a fence or wind block so was a bit too windy to sit in some evenings. It's also all gravel around the hot tub so hurts your feet! Had a few workers call round to do works on the cottage so wasn't as secluded as we would have hoped. Cleaners came to clean before we had even left! Felt a bit pressured to get out quickly. Beautiful location and close to a good pub. Bed was so comfy and the cottage is nicely laid out. Just a few minor details.

Response on behalf of the owner; Thank you very much for your comments which we always welcome as we are keen to improve our cottages for you. The week you spent with us was extraordinarily cold – minus 10, which we have never known before in November. It is now an unseasonably warm 14 degrees! The hot tub has a wonderful view to the hills around Balmoral which our guests love which is why it is not boxed in but at minus 10 degrees after sunset on a windy December night, it must have been chilly. The hot tub has slabs round it, not gravel, but we will investigate putting an external light nearby. We should, of course, have checked with you when you first arrived, if you would mind if we changed your water filter during your stay for which we apologise unreservedly. Changeover is at 10 am which is when the cleaners arrived but if you had asked for a late check out, it could have been arranged. We are glad that overall you enjoyed your week with us.

Been home 2 weeks and already booked up for next year, lovely cottage set on its own, very peaceful, amazing walks from the front door. The hot tub is a great addition and the wood burner makes it feel homely.

Clover Cottage was the perfect holiday retreat for us and our two Italian Spinones! The champagne and fresh cheese scones on arrival was a perfect welcome. This cottage is not tiny, it's cosy, romantic, secluded and peaceful. The hot tub was a real bonus with fab views. We enjoyed fly fishing in the loch with Chris and a hugely enjoyable and informative nature stalk with Craig. Avoid Perth but Braemar and Kirriemuir are well worth a visit. Don't drive by the Glenisla Hotel, it may look unimpressive externally but the welcome, beer and food are worth pulling in for and it's dog friendly. Our only points for improvement would be to create a patio for eating outdoors and to stock the loch with more fish for a more fruitful angling experience!

Unfortunately, this is not a 5 star property as advertised. First of all, it is not a one-bedroom cottage - it is a studio with a bed on a galleried landing - it is really tiny. Secondly, in terms of general appearance, the décor is getting very tired and needs to be repainted; some of the kitchen units have doors peeling at the edges, there is mould in places on the bathroom ceiling and rust on the shower rail. Also we found the bathroom floor had not been properly cleaned. It is therefore, for the space available and the general condition, poor value for money. However, our main niggle was the extortionate cost of electricity which is added to the rental price. They are currently charging 21p per unit when most people at home will be paying around 11 p. We noticed that one previous guest paid nearly £130 in electricity and logs! (We have not paid for electricity separately at any holiday cottage for over 20 years.) So only stay here if you want a small cottage with a hot tub. Otherwise I'm sure you will find better value for money in a scenic location elsewhere.

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you for your comments: it is always so helpful to receive both good and bad to allow us to improve our offering to you. We are very sorry that you did not like Clover Cottage. Most of our guests love it which is why so much of our business is repeat bookings. You say that it is not what you expected. There are lots of photos of this cottage on the / Scottish Country Cottages website and they are up to date so they do give a true reflection of what the cottage is like. You are right that the decoration was becoming a little tired but we are pleased to report that the cottage was completely redecorated at the end of May 2016. The guests prior to you had broken the oven door which heat-damaged the unit immediately beside it but a brand new Neff oven has been installed. The £130 you refer to for electricity and logs was not for one week but for a 3.5 week let, in the winter, with the hot tub on 24/7 in sub-zero temperatures. Sadly we cannot get electricity for 11p; in common with a lot of other rural areas like Devon, Cornwall and most of the rest of the Scottish Highlands we are charged a lot more than urban areas. Although we are surrounded by trees, seasoned logs mean ordering in. If guests do not want to buy from us they can of course buy from the local Tesco or elsewhere.
