Description

Traditional Welsh cottage, enviable location right on the sea shore where at certain times the waves lap on the patio walls!

Blue Sails (ref JPV) is a traditional Welsh holiday cottage with its own garden enjoying a magnificent setting in an AONB, right on the seashore, with waves sometimes lapping against the patio walls, and glorious views of Puffin Island and Snowdonia. The Beach House (ref OHM) lies in a secluded setting, with direct access to the beach, and panoramic views across the Menai Straits to the Snowdonia mountains (see second photograph). This single-storey Scandinavian-style pine lodge is set to the right of Blue Sails. It has a large garden and visitors may enjoy sightings of many species of seabirds, porpoises and even the occasional seal. Beaumaris (2 miles), a World Heritage Site, is Anglesey’s most attractive town; it has a castle, boat trips to Puffin Island, water sports facilities, shops, restaurants and an excellent inn, Ye Olde Bull’s Head (Good Food Guide and Egon Ronay’s Guide) is only yards from Beaumaris Castle. Bangor 8 miles. This cottage is uniquely situated, with its patio next to the high tide line of the Menai Straits. Even in mediocre, dry, weather it is idyllic to sit outside on the patio looking across the straits. The front garden has a super lawn. The position is excellent. This sums up why it has full marks from us for position! In all else it is mediocre. The cottage is full of "character", and is shown on OS maps of 1887! The lounge is the old boating house now connected to the old main building and is the best room with patio doors leading to the patio. Some of the furniture is very period. However on return to the cottage one evening we found a heavy "nautical bulb", that had previously hanging from ceiling, had fallen to the floor. Why? The cord had perished! There are "nooks and crannies" that need more cleaning, particularly amongst the "myriad" of piping that are concomitant with a building of this age. This would be no mean job and needs time. What is galling is the need to clean several basic utensils, and kitchen shelves covered with old grease. Also the two frying pans were not usable as the "teflon" had been scratched off/flaked off through misuse. The usual sheets, containing local information (medical, restaurants, bus timetables, garages, supermarkets), were missing. Though we did find the business card of the local GP stuck to the notice board! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and would possibly come again. But the owner who seems to live in Suffolk should get himself (or his representative) out more often!

    Response from: Administrator

Response on behalf of the owner; We are sorry that you were not entirely satisfied with your stay at Blue Sails. Although there are contemporary paintings and furnishings in the house we did feel that it would be in keeping with the historic nature of the building (formerly a fishermen's cottage serving the nearby fish trap which can be seen from the house) to use period furniture which many guests do seem to enjoy. With regard to your points about cleanliness we have brought this to the attention of the cleaners, but I am sure you will appreciate it is very difficult to respond to comments of this kind in retrospect and we do ask for guests to let us know immediately of such issues so that they can be put right without delay. The frying pans will be replaced. We spend all our family holidays at Blue Sails so please rest assured that frequent and regular inspections are undertaken by ourselves and also by the Regional Manager of English Country Cottages and Cottages4You. We are delighted that you liked the location of the cottage and that you had a great holiday there.
