Description

A former miner’s cottage nestled in a rural setting, on the edge of the Lake District and close to Blake Fell, the nearest of the Lakeland fells.

Blake Fell Cottage sits just 3 miles to the west of the Lake District National Park in the small hamlet of Asby. Dating back to the 19th century, it was one of many such terraced cottages in the district built to house the influx of miners following the discovery of coal, iron ore, lime and sandstone in the area. Families with up to eleven children lived in these two bedroomed cottages until as recently as the 1930s. Conditions inside the cottage would have been very primitive, with the privy located at the bottom of the garden. In the second half of the 20th century, Blake Fell Cottage was purchased along with the other seven cottages for £50 and it was then that they were modernised, each with the addition of a single storey bathroom.
The original, beautiful sandstone fireplace was uncovered during further extensive renovations in the early 21st century. The deeds of the cottage require that any owner of Blake Fell Cottage must not sell alcohol, this was to ensure that there was no competition to the trade at the ’Black Cock’ public house, which was just across the road at the time. The cottage’s name sake is clearly visible from Asby to the east, sitting just inside the Lake District National Park and surrounded by Forestry Commission planting. Blake Fell is the highest of the Loweswater fells at 573m providing views from its summit as far east as the Helvellyn range, and north west to the Solway Firth and Dumfries and Galloway beyond.
There is fly fishing available just 2.4 miles away at Cogra Moss Trout Fishery, permits from £25, March to October. There are three golf courses within a 6 mile range and the nearest is Workington 5.4 miles and non members are welcome and pony trekking is available at Ennerdale 5.1 miles away. Shop 3 miles, pub 3½ miles, restaurant 8 miles.

My friend and I stayed at Blake Fell cottage for the weekend and enjoyed it very much. We were lucky enough to have the sunshine during the days but still had chilly nights. Once the heating was on (and the added bonus of electric blankets) the cold wasn't a problem. We had all we needed while we were there and Steph was great at providing information about the area which was fabulous as we only had a few days away. It was perfect for two friends catching up, thanks to Steph and Gaynor.

Blake Fell Cottage has been thoughtfully set up as a holiday cottage. Its is compact and was ideal for the two of us and our dog. Very steep staircase, not for the faint hearted. We loved the location being both near to coast and to the lakes, travelling to places, in such a beautiful area, was never really an issue. The owners left us a form to fill in with any teething issues that we thought should be addressed. Parking was difficult on a few evenings on our return, but the car was never too far away. It is on a very fast country lane through the village, but suppose that's a sign of the times.

Response on behalf of the owner. Many thanks for taking the time to provide your lovely feedback. We are so pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay at Blake Fell Cottage and made the most of all that the area has to offer - both mountains and coastline in easy reach. I hope you found the sturdy banister rail just the job for those few steep stairs. We hope to welcome you back again soon.

We stayed at Blake Fell Cottage for a week in August 2017 having never been to the Lake District before and had such a great holiday. The cottage was very clean and comfortable - the owners provided all necessary utensils and equipment (plates, cups, cutlery, frying pans, cooker, washing machine, cleaning products etc.) as well as providing little extras (shampoo, travel toothbrush etc.) at a minimal charge and free dog biscuits if you take your dog. The garden was a little small but really nice to sit out in and have a drink on an evening after a long day's activities, so it suited us well. The beds were so comfortable it was hard to get up in the mornings. TV and wifi were also provided at no extra cost and also plenty of 'things to do' leaflets/magazines were available. The small hamlet of Asby had no shops or pubs but supermarkets were available in nearby towns such as Cockermouth and Whitehaven (and other towns), smaller shops and pubs were within even shorter distances (Frizington) - we liked the fact that Asby was so quiet and again it suited us. The Lake District itself is absolutely beautiful, so much to see and do - loads of adventure sport opportunities (kayaking, cycling, walking etc.) to the more relaxed pace (would recommend a boat trip on Windermere and a visit to Muncaster Castle with it's ghosts and birds of prey centre). We loved it, our son is still crying to come back to Blake Fell Cottage and the Lake District over a week later. We definitely will soon. ps. If you are on the taller side remember to watch your head - I banged mine a few times on the door between kitchen and washing machine/ back garden area...my fault, it is well signed and this is a common feature in older cottages.

It certainly sounds like you really made the most of all that the Lakes has to offer during your holiday. As you say, the cottage is in a very quiet rural location but amenities are all within easy reach. We really look forward to seeing you again soon. Very best wishes Steph.

A nice clean cottage well fitted out with everything needed, just a little on the small side for three people and a dog. Pleased it was light nights so we were out till late. Beds were very comfy. A door curtain would be a good addition in my opinion especially for the darker nights when sitting in the lounge with the lights on. Received many a knock to the head when forgetting to duck en route to the bathroom.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; Thank you very much for booking and I am so glad you enjoyed your stay. We were delighted that you had a week of such fabulous weather to enjoy the wonderful countryside on the door step in this lovely rural location, as well as enjoying the pretty little sun trap at the back. I am glad you found the beds comfy and found everything you needed - our guests comfort and enjoyment is our top priority and our cleaner is fastidious in ensuring that Blake Fell Cottage is cleaned to the highest possible standard. I hope your little dog enjoyed all the extra goodies we provided, and that she benefited from the dog towel after some lake swims. The photos accurately portray the size of this old miner's cottage so I am sorry to hear that you found it a little small. With cottages such as this, door frames can be low and as you found we do have a couple of low ones, hence the big signs displayed to help avoid a bump. Thank you for your comments about the door curtain, it is something that we will certainly consider however the double glazing prevents drafts and the opaque glass and lack of passers-by assure that privacy is maintained, whilst ensuring that day light can flood in. We hope you enjoy the rest of your summer.
