We need another holiday to get over this stay. We took our dog with us and had no idea that a main road was outside the ungated driveway so we could not let him roam unattended (having paid £20 extra for the privilege of having our dog with us). The seating area was at the back as expected but could not be accessed without walking right round through a large gate & the table was quite shabby. The conservatory roof leaked during heavy rain so we placed pots on the dining table to catch water. There was very little natural light except in the conservatory & the electric lighting was badly positioned- only 1 bedside light in the bedroom,no direct light by the kitchen (we had to use a torch to read cooker controls). The heating (which we had to pay £30 extra for) did not seem to come on timed so I used the over ride. The "Cata" (sold by B & Q) ceramic hob kept failing after 1 use then hours later (the next morning) worked again. We wasted several pounds worth of fresh food we had prepared to cook. When I tried to ring the owner, Loretta, in the evening about the problem both her tel. numbers went to answerservice. As the adjoining cottage ("Thorn") was free from Monday Loretta did allow us to use the working ceramic hob (Samsung) there - this was useful but not convenient. The fridge was very small with a larger freezer section on top so we had to stoop down to get to the fridge section. More fresh vegetables were wasted because we could not store them in the fridge. The provided tin opener was rusty and did not work, also there was only 1 bath towel (showing a reddish stain) and 3 hand towels. When I rang Loretta on Saturday about this (no reply on her phones Friday evening) she was on holiday in Scotland & said she would get towels along with a new tin opener for us on her return. These were left in a bag on the door late Sunday. Batteries in the Skybox remote control were worn out. There was no wi-fi initially as the ethernet lead had been unplugged from the box & the lead was not obvious. My wife was very stressed out by the whole experience. There were only coat hooks in the porch and quite limited space for storing clothes in the bedroom. A kitchen table would have been useful for preparing meals (we felt the cottage was aimed at microwave using guests). Finally there was no folder of local information at all and also manuals for equipment (hidden in cupboard) which has been standard at other cottages. I did pay Loretta (by cheque) the £50 for heating & dog as I had agreed to this originally but I did not feel inclined to give it to her at all (she knocked our door on Thursday morning, chasing the payment). There was a handwritten cash envelope left by her in the cottage for our arrival.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you for the feedback, we take all feedback on board. I am sorry you did not enjoy your stay. In regards to the dogs at the property, as per the Booking Terms & Conditions provided by Cottages 4 You, dogs are not to be left unattended at the property and should be kept on a lead at all times within the boundaries of the Cottage. It’s never been brought to our attention that the lighting is an issue at the Cottage, but I will ensure all bulbs and lighting are working correctly and will also check the batteries in the remotes are all working fine. The road is a B-road so no buses or trucks along the road but can get quite busy during peak times; this is out of our control. The hob has been replaced; the conservatory roof has been fixed. The heating is available for you to switch on when you feel you need it; it is not set on timers as not all guests require it. The tin opener and towels were replaced and we do apologise for the stain on the towel. There is wardrobe space in the bedroom, and we have never had it brought to our attention that there is not enough storage. There is a folder located in the lounge with local information and internet connection was down on the day you arrived as there were issues with connection in the local area. Since your stay in October 2015, the Cottage has been updated with new floor coverings, the walls painted throughout and a new washing machine and fridge freezer has been fitted.

A lovely little cottage but I wouldn't want to stay with a dog again. It was right at the side of a very busy road. The traffic came up and down at high speed and as that was the only place to 'toilet' your dog in the morning and at night, it made it quite a near death experience every time you went out, I had to carry my little dog!!. Even more dangerous in the dark! You weren't able to use the out door space without going out of the conservatory and round to the back of the cottage. So a dog isn't able to 'wander' in and out because it wasn't safe and enclosed. A cosy little cottage but full of spiders and cobwebs!!!

A very good "value for money" property for use as temporary holiday accommodation. Location somewhat remote, however, making use of a SATNAV virtually essential for easy getting around by car.
