The cottage was a real disappointment due to the lack of cleanliness throughout the cottage, tired furniture and equipment, dirty looking bed sheets. Even the cleaning equipment had seen better days. The whole cottage is in serious need of a coat of paint, the windows have not been cleaned for a very long time and must be a heaven for spiders....cobwebs! especially in the back entrance, which we could not use. The welcome pack is well and truly needing updated, with menus dating from 2014. Facilities info being crossed out with a pen, the list of how many towels, cutlery, etc... is definitely not accurate. The outside could be made so much more appealing if it was tidied up and the windows and doors cleaned up. The views however were stunning!

Response on behalf of the Owner; We are disappointed to hear that you were dissatisfied with some aspects of your stay at Beechwood Cottage. The two main sofas are around three years old, both leather and looking fine, some of the other furniture is older, but clean and well maintained. All the bed linen was changed in autumn 2015 from John Lewis and again is in excellent condition. All the cleaning equipment is functional and that is the key specification, not the age: brushes brush, vacuum cleaners suck, etc. All the walls are clean and painted annually. Cobwebs are quite common, the house is in the countryside; spiders exist and can spin a web overnight. I assume the can't leave by the back door means there was a cobweb, if visitors need things cleared because spiders are around I'm sure the caretaker will assist with a brush. The welcome pack has the current information in it, just because there are items from 2014 do not mean it is out of date. I haven't counted cutlery recently, but I know from staying there myself in February that there is ample for 4 guests. Towels are laid out in accordance with what we stated and if there is a need for more the caretaker has access to a large number. During winter, there is likely to be a large number of leaves swirling around, along with twigs. This is not addressed on a weekly basis since it would be ludicrous, it is winter, but once winter is finished, the grounds have maintenance work carried out on them every two weeks for 4-8 hours, which is more than adequate.

Normally I do not believe every review of a property but on this cottage it was spot on. We were very happy to have booked this cottage as it was near to where we live and our house had been flooded due to the storms. We tried calling the caretakers before we arrived and they were very unhelpful. We arrived and was given the quickest tour round we have ever had. The place was very dirty and lots of stuff was broken- cooker, double bed etc. We decided to leave two days earlier than what we had paid for as our house was fixed and the cottage was making life uncomfortable being unable to cook a full dinner and having the worlds smallest tv etc. We tried to call the caretakers loads of times but did not answer. On the day we were meant to leave we finally got a phone call from the caretakers demanding the keys asap. I drove and dropped them off and the caretakers was very rude and unpleasant to me. When we arrived we were told we could leave anytime of the day but obviously something changed alone the way. A day later I realised I had left my Nike glasses at the property and called and knocked at the caretakers home but never got an answer so I had to right them off. We loved the cottages location and the size of it but in its ran down state and the attuide of the caretakers I would not go back.

Response on behalf of the owner; Thank you for your feedback. I was most disappointed to read your comments. I will be in the Cottage again this weekend and I will check the cooker and the bed, however, I was there last weekend and there was no apparent damage to either. In terms of the cleanliness, you did not raise any issues whilst being shown around the Cottage upon arrival and I would expect anyone who was shown around to indicate if there were any concerns should the cleanliness have not been up to standard. The caretaker did mention that there was an agreement that you could leave any time on your final day rather than the contracted 10am however unfortunately, after you had left, it was found that the keys were missing, hence the reason you were contacted to urgently return the keys. As for the TV, the property does have a TV, it is not large, but it would be fair to say that most people who come to this area do so to enjoy the beautiful scenery and enjoy the outdoors rather than sitting inside, this reflects the size of the TV. Finally comments on the caretaker, the property has been let for almost ten years now, and the same caretaker has been there all the time and this is the first comment of this type made about her. The caretaker works very hard to ensure a lovely holiday experience for all of our guests. I was in fact there yesterday and there is no damage to the bed or the cooker, though I am re-plastering a small hole in the wall.

The cottage is in a great location - a short walk down the road and Loch Long is in front of you, the mountains are all around you and the views are superb. The cottage is also just a short walk away from The Village Inn which does food and serves a good selection of local Real Ales. There are decent bus and train links to Glasgow, Oban etc so Arrochar is a good base for exploring that part of Scotland. The cottage itself feels a bit tired in places. The mattress on the double bed has seen better days, the sofa in the rear sunroom is going saggy and the kitchen is past it's best (the cupboard doors don't shut properly and will spring back open at the slightest touch and the cooker is not that great). If all you want to use the kitchen for is making drinks then it's fine, we did cook meals so noticed more of its limitations. We also noticed fluff in the corners of rooms, behind the tv cabinet, under the bed etc. But everywhere else was clean including, most importantly, the bathroom and kitchen. There is a lot of garden surrounding the cottage, so on a good day you can sit outside and enjoy the views.
