Description

As part of a barn conversion, this first floor apartment is set in a fantastic location with stunning views and plenty walks.

Alta Lyn Barns are set high above the seaside towns of Lynton and Lynmouth. With far reaching views out to the Bristol Channel, these three properties (HKKP, HKKW & HMMH) are part of a barn conversion set within the Exmoor National Park. Set amongst some of the most glorious scenery to be found in Devon, plenty of footpaths and coastal walks can be taken from the apartments, leading to both the South West Coast Path and on to Exmoor National Park. Here you will find walking to suit all abilities and there are plenty of opportunities to spot red deer, Exmoor ponies and buzzards. The properties are well located for exploring the area. Make sure you visit the Victorian cliff railway at Lynton. To the west are some of the country’s finest beaches at Woolacombe and Putsborough. In Ilfracombe you will find the harbour area, Damian Hirst’s ’Verity’ guarding the harbour entrance. There is also the Landmark Theatre and a good range of shops and amenities. A visit to the Combe Martin Wildlife Park and Watermouth Castle all make for an enjoyable day out. Travelling east, take a trip into medieval Dunster, 10 miles, with its historic yarn market, deer park and imposing castle (National Trust). Minehead is 18 miles away, with its super promenade to sit and enjoy an ice cream. Minehead is also home to the West Somerset Steam Railway. Take in some of the small villages close by on your travels, such as Blue Anchor, Porlock, Bossington and Withypool. There are National Trust properties at Arlington and Knightshayes. Cycling, horse riding, golf and fishing are all available locally. Shops 1 mile, pub 500 yards.

All on first floor: Living/dining room/kitchen with beams and wooden floor. 2 double bedrooms (one four poster), one with additional bunk over. Bathroom with shower over bath and toilet.

Stairgate. CD. Small courtyard with furniture. Parking (2 cars).

Electricity, underfloor heating from solar panels and air source heat pumps included (October-April £30 per week, £25 per short break). Bed linen, towels and Wi-Fi included. Travel cot. High chair. Weather was poor so this affected our holiday. Cottage generally well equipped, warm, and and comfortable but lacking personal touches. Although light enough the lack of eye level windows made it feel slightly claustrophobic and first impressions of the barn in the rain was slightly off- putting. Peter the caretaker was very helpful. Plenty of towels which was appreciated.

We did not consider this property to have been adequately cleaned, festooned with cobwebs some of which had been there a long time, old coffee and sugar left in pots in the kitchen, smell from some of the soft furnishings. Nor did we believe the level of maintenance to be acceptable, the broken dining table known to the owner not rectified before our arrival and unsafe, satellite TV having only 2 working channels, intermittent programmes on dishwasher. The access lane to the property door is unmade and both muddy when wet and subject to animal droppings from the adjoining working farm.

If there was a small down side to the it would perhaps be the lack of view from the windows. It is really more suited to say two couples or a family of 5 as there are only two bedrooms However the view from outside is good and the communal garden area at the rear pleasant laid out with several individual areas. There are two or three other cottages within the long barn conversion which are equally charming. Peter who looks after the cottages is friendly and helpful and it is only a 5/10 minute drive to Lynton or Lynmouth. Local shopping is a bit restricted but you are staying on a farm. We very much enjoyed our stay and would return were we to visit the area.

We wouldn't recommend this cottage for 5 adults ! It is too small . It is surrounded by beautiful countryside and says it has a sea view but there are no eye level windows to appreciate it !

Nice cosy cottage on a working farm. Clean and tidy. Everything you need. Great local pub with excellent food but you need to drive for everything else. Good venue for walkers. Caretaker, Peter, is always on hand to help.
