Description

A welcoming 17th century holiday let in over an acre of land. Centrally based with walks from the door and a pub just half a mile away.

Scenic location

Chestnut Farm, a 17th century Derbyshire farm, longbarn and dairy have been sympathetically converted into five individual properties that combine modern comfort with the distinctive construction methods of the era. Set within 1¼ acres of courtyard and grounds, the farm looks out over the undisputed beauty of the Peak District National Park, and yet is less than 15 minutes to the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. Retaining many original features including beams and exposed stone walls, each cottage offers individual holiday accommodation, welcoming couples or large family parties who may wish to book several cottages together. Situated in Uppertown, just above the village of Bonsall, high above the wooded ’Via Gellia’ gorge, it is ideal for walkers with the Limestone Way passing immediately alongside the farm. Matlock is 10 minutes away with supermarket, bus and rail, and a steam train up the Derwent Valley. The lively town of Matlock Bath, approximately 2½ miles by car or walk through woodland, has a mining museum, Abraham Cable Cars and Gullivers Kingdom. All the scenic delights of the Peak District are a short drive including Carsington Water, High Peak Trail, Dovedale and the Manifold Valley. The market towns of Bakewell, Buxton and Ashbourne are all within a half hour drive along with Chatsworth House, Haddon Halla and the Crich Tramway Village all a similar drive. Alton Towers and the Potteries are well worth the drive. Shop 100 yards, pub ½ mile.

Ground floor: Living room. Dining room. Kitchen with beams and tiled floor. Spiral stairs to first floor: 2 bedrooms: 1 double, 1 bunk. Bathroom with shower over bath and toilet. Separate spiral stairs to first floor: 1 twin bedroom with en-suite shower room and toilet.

Electric woodburner in living room included. Washing machine. Fridge/freezer. Limestone sitting-out area. Parking (2 cars). One pet welcome (to be kept on a lead at all times).

All properties: Gas central heating, underfloor heating, gas, electricity, bed linen and towels included. Freeview TV. DVD. CD. Gas cooker. Microwave. Dishwasher. Shared playing field. No smoking.

Lovely Easter gifts were arranged on a table to welcome us. Although the weather was mixed, snow, rain and wind, the cottage was always warm and comfortable. Mr Nutting was there to welcome us and dealt immediately with minor problems during our stay. It was very well equipped and we appreciated having hand wash, washing up liquid and all the cloths we needed in the kitchen. The rooms are stylishly furnished and in keeping the the beautiful conversion of the old barn. Our second Easter holiday in Barn End.

A lovely cottage, in nice grounds with a warm welcome and information given from owners on arrival, with a complimentary bottle of wine and biscuits waiting! the cottage was completely equiped with everything needed to make it feel like home from home from an iron to hairdryer. Fully furnished and very comfortable, clean and tidy. We absolutely enjoyed our stay. Also the Barley Mow pub within walking distance (although on a steep(ish) hill) extended a very warm welcome with live music and excellent food, a good night Friday night out! Some beautiful views

The cottage was better than we expected. Four of us stayed and had such a wonderful time lounging about in the cottage. The underfloor heating was a real comfort with the bad weather. The only things that needs some tlc are the microwave and the en-suite loo. But everything else was 5*. Having a large cooker and dishwasher helped make cooking easy and the large living areas made us feel very at home. Would definitely book again!

We found this cottage to be in a perfect location to visit the whole of Derbyshire. It was well equipped and had everything we needed for a pleasant stay. There was plenty of seating and the rooms were spacious. We have no complaints at all about this stay/property. Points to note and these are by no means complaints just useful to know:- the exercise field for the dog was not secure so if like us your have a little pickle then a long line was useful, a standard baby gate didn't fit the front door to keep the door open with the dog inside, the outside area is shared and at times other families children were playing outside our front window. If you want to sit and watch TV then you are on the wrong holiday and if it rains the signal goes which is hilarious. There was plenty of room for our 42 inch dog crate in the dining room without getting in the way. The two pubs are walkable to within the village however these are small and the Barley Mow was quite 'lively' at times. We were lucky enough to see the annual event of 'Chicken racing' which was hilarious. The Rising Sun, Middleton was a very welcoming pub, child and dog friendly and great value on food and drink. The White Lion at Starkholmes was also a brilliant dog and child friendly pub although booking recommended. Crich Tramway museum is totally dog friendly and the walks around Chatsworth are free (car parking charges apply). Peak Cavern at Castleton is also dog friendly and well worth a visit. We used a local kennels Heather Dene Kennels and boarding just outside Matlock for our day out to Gullivers and our dog was more than happy. Would certainly stay here again as plenty more to see and do.
