"Enjoy the ‘cream’ of Devon at one of the ten cottages on the Ashcombe Estate..."

Situated in the heart of rolling Devon countryside, the privately owned Ashcombe country estate nestles in a peaceful valley close to the sandy beaches of Dawlish and Torquay. Enjoy walking on the estate’s hills and woodlands, swim in the heated indoor swimming pool, or relax in the sauna at Woodhouse Farm while children play in the indoor and outdoor playgrounds. The owners have made a great effort to ensure that the cottages are both comfortable and practical while the location could not be better for a wide range of Devon attractions.
It might be a family holiday or big reunion, a special celebration, a fun business get-together, a group trip, or a relaxing weekend to recharge your batteries; whatever the reason the facilities are designed to be perfect for winter and summer holidays and the secrets of the Ashcombe cottages’ appeal are presentation, comfort and convenience. The cottages are maintained to very high standards. All have leather sofas, flatscreen digital TVs and very comfortable mattresses - the owners consider a good night’s sleep the most important thing! The cottages either have Italian tiled floors or wooden floors, and some still retain many original features including oak beamed ceilings. The properties cater for almost any party size, sleeping from 4 to 28 people and are all rated either 4 or 5 stars. Ashcombe’s larger cottages provide great value for money for visitors sharing with their friends and families. For meals, an in-house chef can be booked to come and do the hard work (arranged direct with the owner). The heated indoor swimming pool, very close to the properties (apart from HGGL which is 1 mile away and has its own pool) is perfect for any rainy days and keep the children happy. Cider Barn sleeping 16 and Nut Tree Farm sleeping 28, which are both 5 star rated, also have outdoor swimming pools for the summer.
For those wishing to enjoy a more adrenaline-charged holiday, the brilliant Ashcombe outdoor activity centre (at extra cost) offers quad bike safaris, clay pigeon shooting, archery, paintballing and more and is located just under a mile down the lane and is available for those 14 years and over. Families with youngsters will love the ’A Touch of the Wild’, a camp based activity club where children can take part in courses like bush-craft and canoe building, or if you want to keep them entertained for longer you could enrol them in the Woodland Adventure Club where they will discover the fun you can have in the wild. From camp fire cooking and toasting marshmallows to bug hunting and learning woodland skills, a day with the experienced staff will ensure they come away with a new found love of the great outdoors. And for adults the Ashcombe Village Club provides cheap beer, event evenings and a cheerful atmosphere from which to unwind.
Both Dartmoor National Park and the historic city of Exeter are only 20 minutes’ drive away while the famous South Devon Coast, with wonderful sandy beaches, is barely 3 miles. Exeter and Newton Abbot Racecourses, several golf courses, loads of family theme parks, zoos, sailing and fishing are all within easy reach, not to mention the many excellent pubs and restaurants that Devon is famous for. The wild beauty of Dartmoor is 20 minutes away with its abundance of wildlife and dramatic landscapes. Numerous National Trust properties are close by including Agatha Christie’s Greenway. Steam trains travel from Kingswear to Paignton and Totnes to Buckfastleigh. Visit historic Dartmouth with bustling boat harbour, castle, contemporary art galleries and boutiques. Salcombe with its beaches, sailing and water sports is also easily accessible, as well as Blackpool Sands, Slapton and picturesque Dittisham with its annual crab catching competition. Slightly f...

Slightly further afield, East Cornwall and the Eden Project are within an hour’s drive. Take a walk along the South West Coast Path which runs along the entire length of the Jurassic Coast and offers the walker stunning views, with a bird’s eye view of many coastal features. From the coast path you can experience the drama of sheer cliff faces, take in the wonderful towns of Beer, the ‘picture postcard’ fishing village, or Budleigh Salterton. This tranquil and historic seaside town nestles on the edge of a pebble beach beneath spectacular red cliffs, made famous by literary giants such as Noel Coward, P.G. Wodehouse and Anthony Trollope. Visit Seaton with its famous trams or Sidmouth which still has a unique charm and has captivated thousands of holidaymakers. Beautiful gardens, leisurely walks, Regency history, clean beaches and friendly shops – it is all here in this lovely seaside town. All in all Ashcombe is an excellent base to explore, experience and enjoy ‘The Cream of Devon’. Main shops 3 miles.

Wow! We loved our stay at Endeavour (wished we could of stayed longer) The house was perfect and very comfortable with our party of 8 adults & 8 children. The seating and kitchen equipment was perfect for a big group. Thank you. We loved being just opposite the pool and the children loved the play room which was extremely well equipped. We loved the peaceful setting and will be back - hopefully for longer next time. Recommend this property highly!!

Plus points; the size of living space was good, lovely site and facilities, helpful staff, nice to have a sauna. Not so good; some of the bathrooms felt a bit tired and in need of an update, there were lots of dusty corners so it didn't feel that clean overall. The built in wardrobes in a couple of bedrooms were very damp smelling so I personally didn't use mine at all. Could have had some decent knives and chopping boards in a house designed for so many guests.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; Unfortunately one bedroom in Endeavour does occasionally get a very small area of damp in the wardrobe, the wardrobe is regularly stain blocked and painted but as yet no one has been able to find the cause. I have spoken to the cleaners regarding the cleaning. I’m not sure what the guest required in the way of chopping boards and knives… there are three chopping boards in Endeavour and (currently) nine knives plus a sharpening steel. We add a new vegetable knife and carving knife to our cottages twice a year, once before the summer holidays and again just before Christmas.

Wonderful, the location is a real get away from it all. I wouldn't recommend it as a place to take a minibus and apart from a small pool not really any more amenities laid on. We had a great time though.

Well thought out and equipped. Swimming pool and other facilities very good. Would be helpful with a large party to have a better broadband service. All in all, though, a very good arrangement and stay, we enjoyed ourselves at Endeavour.

Our clients had a wonderful stay in very pleasant surroundings. This is why our organisation keeps coming back to use the facilities. Our clients have a learning disability and appreciate the familiarity and we acknowledge the kindness and understanding of the owners.

Our family holiday at the cottage was lovely with stunning views of the Devon country side. The cottage was very spacious and well equipped for families. There was a onsite warm indoor swimming pool within walking distance of the cottage and also lots of other child oriented activities. The only downsides to the cottage we stayed in was that we thought it was not very well layed out in places, ie the kitchen could do with more plugs where the toasters are kept so you don't have to move them every morning, also one of the cutteraly sets need be put by the kettles so you don't have to walk around the kitchen when you forget a spoon or knife. Some of the matterises need replacing as they are so noisy, even the littlest movement the springs would make so much noise. The drainage in some of the bathrooms was poor with sinks not draining and some showers, all in the the bathrooms could do with updating as well as some other areas. The last point we want to make is the cleanliness of the floor, we had to where shoes in doors in the end as the floor was so dirty. Overall tho if these few issues can be rectified it would be the perfect family cottage, which we would all love to visit again.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; Thank you for your feedback. We are pleased that you enjoyed our lovely cottage and we agree the area is, undeniably, stunning! We intend to address all comments that have been raised and we thank you for bringing them to our attention. We have already made a start and replaced the double mattresses and some of the single mattresses. The slow draining sinks and showers have been cleared and the bathrooms have either been updated or are in line to be updated. The cleanliness of the floor has been brought to the attention of our cleaners. We are particularly pleased to hear that you would stay with us again on future visits to Devon and very much look forward to welcoming you back.
