Set in a spectacular location on the shores of Loch Fyne, this detached holiday cottage is an ideal base for exploring the Kintyre Peninsula and the famous Crinan Canal. Ferries leave from Tarbert for crossings to the Mull of Kintyre, Arran, Gigha or Islay. Oban, the Gateway to the Isles is a scenic one hour drive. Inveraray Castle, historic Kilmartin Glen and Campbeltown are all within a short drive. Shop 4 miles, pub and restaurant 3 miles.

    A week coping with dirty brown tap water. Anyone reading this needs to also see other reviews on the web about relatively daingerous property steep tight drive onto a road with lorries rushing for ferries. This would be an issue for timid drivers. Owners provide some clean drinking water which two of us exhasted within the week. Cottage needs some basic maintanance. We suffered blocked sink which to be fair the owner did fix when reported. Dirtier than normal water due to a filter issue that did improve after some attention. Failing floor boards in kitchen and main bedroom. The approach of covering the kitchen problem with mats is not ideal as its an area you do walk on a lot. Missing grate and ashpan for the fire.

    Response on behalf of the Owner; The colour of the private water supply is due to peat in the water. The colour becomes darker after periods of heavy rain. The system has filters in-line which are regularly replaced and the whole system (reservoir, holding tank and piping) is cleaned four times a year to prevent any blockage. We provide 20 litres of bottled water per week which most guests find adequate, in fact some guests do not use it at all. I have previously replied to a comment regarding the road and entrance to Artilligan, pointing out that these issues are obviously outwith my influence, although I did write to the road management company (Bear Scotland) offering some ideas regarding traffic management. All guests are advised about the entrance and the water supply when I speak with them before they arrive, there is also information on the websites. I have visited Artilligan on several occasions over the past few weeks and there is no basic maintenance required, there are certainly no loose floorboards (all the floorboards and joists were replaced a few years ago when Artilligan was renovated prior to letting). There is only one mat/runner in the kitchen which is just inside the door to help stop any water or mud from being brought in. Interestingly the floor under the mat is concrete rather than floorboards. The wood burning stove in the lounge has never had a grate or ashpan as it is not designed to burn coal, but just wood or peat. We are very pleased that so many guests enjoy staying at Artilligan, with several returning each year and were delighted to have received for the second time a “Customers’ Choice Certificate”, this time for 2016, for “consistently receiving a score of 9.5 (or above) for the overall rating through the Reevoo customer satisfaction feedback.” We are disappointed not to be able to please all of our guests all of the time, but will continue to try.

    Our stay at Artilligan was perfect. The cottage is in a beautiful, peaceful location, right next to Loch Fyne. It was fully equipped with everything we wanted and needed, and was extremely comfortable. It is fairly isolated but within a few miles either way there were shops. An ideal location to explore the surrounding area, but equally ideal just to sit in the living room and gaze out of the window at the ever changing view. I can't recommend it enough.

    This was our 5th stay at the cottage. The property is spacious and generally comfortable and well equipped. The double bed in the main bedroom is the most comfortable and spacious bed we have experienced in a holiday cottage. The views of the Loch are stunning as always. The only slight issue we had was the current situation with the drinking water. On our previous 2 week stay, there was ample bottled drinking water stored in the garage for the duration of our stay. On this occasion, upon arrival we noted that there was only 24 litres of water stored in the garage/kitchen fridge for our 2 week stay. This is a minor whinge, but we spent an additional £20 on bottled water this time. This has not put us off and we shall be returning at some stage.

    1. Dangerous 60mph road 6m from front door. 2. Crash vehicles entering garden during stay. Emergency services then took over the holiday property and we were not able to leave until the road was cleared and the casualties had gone to hospital. 3. No wi-fi or land line due to crash vehicle hitting telegraph pole. 4. Dangerous access to property, unable to turn into house from the road. Have to drive past and find a suitable turning location and enter from the opposite side. 5. I t is equally difficult to leave the property as you are situated on a hill and visibility is reduced with the close proximity of the pillars, directly onto a short length of 60mph road. 6. An accident nearly occurred on arrival as there were workman hidden fixing the recent vehicle damage to one pillar. 7. The log burner is leaking smoke and unusable. 8. Septic tank not working. Solid waste discharging onto beach. 9. Ran out of drinking water on day 2. 10. Lock on bathroom door broken. 11. Recycling bin full on arrival. 12. Frying pan burnt black and unusable. 13. Settee in sitting room unusable.

    Response on behalf of the Owner; I obviously have no control over the speed limit or the proximity of the road from the house. I have spoken with “BEAR Scotland” who are responsible for the road although it is most unlikely that they will erect more ARMCO barriers. There was a Road Traffic Accident in the morning of 10/4/17 when a box-van demolished the telegraph pole outside the property and then crashed through the end wall of the garden, (approximately 60 – 70 metres from the cottage). The Police phoned me on my mobile (I was then in Crete on holiday) to inform me of the incident and to say they had contacted Open Reach to replace the pole and reconnect the land-line/internet connection. I have spoken to the Police on two occasions since who assured me that the emergency services did not take over the holiday property, but that the road was blocked after the accident and again during recovery, so obviously this guest could not use the road during this period. I really do not understand how this guest thinks that I could have influenced the situation. All guests receive directions to the property prior to arrival and they clearly state to go past the property and turn around so that the access to the property is easy. I reminded these guests of this when we spoke a few days before they arrived. She was quite happy and said she had read this on the information that Cottages.com had supplied. It is however quite possible to turn directly into the property as we do and also our repeat visitors of whom we are grateful to have several. Leaving the property is not difficult as there is a 1 metre diameter convex mirror which allows you to see any traffic coming from the Ardrishaig side (the side of the road closest to the property) and since we removed the bushes near the gate some two years ago the view to the Tarbert side is visible to any normal height car, including 4x4 vehicles which these guests were driving. The workmen this guest mentioned were sorting the gate which had sunk slightly. This was not due to “recent vehicle damage”. The wood-burning stove is working fine. It was in fact checked the week before the guests came and I checked it again on 22/4/17. A number of visitors are unfamiliar with wood-burning stoves and although there are detailed instructions as to how to use it in the information folder not everyone reads it. The guest was advised that if they had any problems during their stay to contact our younger son who acts as caretaker when we are away and lives locally. His contact details are on our notice board. He was not contacted by these guests, although did visit out of courtesy on the Monday evening to check they had no problems and to see the damage to the wall. He told me that the guests were both chatty and were happy with the cottage and were not distressed about the damage to the wall, although told him that he would probably keep their dog on a lead due to the wall being breached. Artilligan has never had a septic tank, the sewage system does not discharge onto the beach, it is piped into the loch. Environmental health are fully aware of the arrangements which have been operational for over 100 years. We provide 20 litres of bottled water per week. Interestingly there was still 4 litres of the bottled water that I had provided left on 17/4/17, after the guests had left. The lock on the bathroom door was working fine when I visited on 22/4/17. We provide 2 recycling bins which are emptied every 2nd week, (there is also a General bin which is emptied every 3rd week). There was no collection the week before the guests arrived and on the Saturday they came, one recycling bin was ¾ full and the other was empty. Again I can’t change the council collection times. We have two frying pans (both about 30 cm) neither are burnt black and unusable, both have a Teflon coating (as checked 22/4/17). We have three settees in the living room. One is six weeks old and has been stained by the family as noticed by my wife and our cleaner; all the settees are in good working condition.
