Description

Begin an adventure with a bit of style, elegance and class, with many walks from the doorstep and an award-winning pub to enjoy a quiet evening drink.

Southrop is one of the loveliest quintessential Cotswolds villages. The village itself is skirted by the River Leach and is in an unspoilt area of the Cotswolds, with many walks directly from the cottage to the surrounding towns and villages. Apple Tree Cottage is a real delight and has been completely renovated. It has hairdryers in each bedroom and is fully equipped. Just metres away from this highly appointed holiday cottage is an award-winning Cotswold public house and there are a number of pub/restaurants serving good food within 25 minutes’ drive. The characterful market towns of both Lechlade and Burford are close by, with many quintessential Cotswold towns and villages to explore, including Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold, Bibury, Fairford, Chipping Campden, Cirencester and Chipping Norton. There are plenty of sporting activities to indulge in including water sports, boating on the River Thames, fishing, golf, walking and horse riding. Within one hour’s drive, there is Blenheim Palace, the birthplace of Winston Churchill, and an abundance of National Trust properties within 30 minutes’ drive. These include the magnificent 17th-century Lodge Park and Sherborne Estate, built as a grandstand with stunning views over the deer park and countryside, and Buscot Park, a late 18th-century house in enchanting grounds. Don’t miss Highgrove, the country residence of Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, whose gardens are open to the public between April and October on selected dates. There are also numerous museums such as the fascinating Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford, and the Ashmoleum Museum with its collection of Egyptian mummies and other world treasures. For children, The Cotswold Farm Park near Guiting Power specialises in rare breeds of animals and offers seasonal demonstrations including lambing, shearing and milking. Slimbridge Wetlands Centre is an internationally important reserve and is home to the world’s largest collection of rare and exotic water birds. Only a short distance from the cottage is the Cotswold Wildlife Park. This 120-acre park is home to a collection of animals from all over the world, many of which are threatened or endangered species in the wild. Visitors will also find gardens, a café, an adventure playground and a narrow gauge railway. Shakespeare’s Stratford-upon-Avon and famous Cheltenham and its various festivals are all easily accessible for a day out. Shop 2 miles, pub and restaurant 50 yards.

We had a lovely stay the cottage was beautiful, the area remote - which is what we wanted - and the children loved the roll top bath and giant showers!

The only down side was the lounge area was not that big ideal for a weekend but a bit small for a longer stay. The bedrooms were large and as for the showers top of the range.

Comfortable, peaceful, charming property. The bedrooms are spacious and the bathrooms extremely comfortable. Just sufficient space outside to enjoy a glass of wine in the evenings. Thoughtful welcome pack enabled us to have a tasty cooked breakfast ! The Swan public house in the village is a superb eatery and Southrop is well placed for visiting the other beautiful villages in The Cotswolds.
