My husband and I stayed here in July with our mother and our two small dogs. We found the cottage perfect for our requirements, very clean and comfortable in every way and the location was very peaceful and secluded. The only thing we thought that lets the cottage down is the outside area. We felt it was unkept with lots of over grown bushes and the drive way was unswept as there was lots of dog hairs and other debris from previous guests dogs and would also benefit from the outside furniture being upgraded. We also found that we had to try and block the main gates with whatever we could find as the gap beneath the gates and the spaces between the bars of the gates are big enough for our dogs to escape straight onto the road (as they did on a number of occasions, especially when a horse and rider or other walkers passed). Maybe just some chicken wire would suffice. The entrance area into the cottage was perfect for dog owners with stone floors and closed off from the kitchen and lounge area meant they could dry off before allowing then into the cottage and a perfect sleeping area for them. Overall we enjoyed our stay at Ancient Cottage and would stay again but without the dogs due to the security of the gates.

Great location if wanting to be remote. Wow factor at first, but a few issues. Shower in double room en-suite very difficult (sometimes impossible),to prime (book warns of such, so why not fix it?), & constant deep humming at night, traced to sewage pump, causing me headaches in the morning- worst in twin room. One other issue, the whole house stank really badly after rain, again caused by the septic tank. No external lighting at all, poor if wanting to sit/eat outside in the evenings. Apart from these issues, lovely property.

Unfortunately the property was down graded from a 4 to 3* after we booked. BUT the kitchen was ill equipped, plenty or crockery but sharp knives were cheap and did not cut well, no oven gloves, no handle for grill pan, toaster on its last legs. Nothing to clean with. Mats for dining room grotty and needed replacing. Living area sparse but did the job. Main bedroom lampshade an inch thick in dust and 2 floor mats(really for use outside of house covered in hair. Table and chair on veranda rusty and no chairs!! Shower only had one temperature...boiling. Small room fine. Twin room dirty, hair dog collar and rubbish under bed one bed on a tilt...this was not down to the floor being uneven. Bunk beds fine but one pillow was filthy and stained and this was only noticed when we had to strip the beds. The property could be stunning and let out for more it was such a shame. The smell from the outside cesspit was dreadful for most of the week...perhaps it was due to be emptied.
