The cottage is in a beautiful location, but is certainly not worth the price being charged to stay in the main holiday weeks! Lots of problems, the main one being the en-suite shower not working, this is a problem that had obviously been there for a while judging from the complaints already made in the guest book, eight people sharing one bathroom is not ideal! In the twin bedroom the beds are just bunk beds cut in half with awful lumpy mattresses and the house smells very musty and damp Very disappointing!!

Great location if wanting to be remote. Wow factor at first, but a few issues. Shower in double room en-suite very difficult (sometimes impossible),to prime (book warns of such, so why not fix it?), & constant deep humming at night, traced to sewage pump, causing me headaches in the morning- worst in twin room. One other issue, the whole house stank really badly after rain, again caused by the septic tank. No external lighting at all, poor if wanting to sit/eat outside in the evenings. Apart from these issues, lovely property.

My husband and I stayed here in July with our mother and our two small dogs. We found the cottage perfect for our requirements, very clean and comfortable in every way and the location was very peaceful and secluded. The only thing we thought that lets the cottage down is the outside area. We felt it was unkept with lots of over grown bushes and the drive way was unswept as there was lots of dog hairs and other debris from previous guests dogs and would also benefit from the outside furniture being upgraded. We also found that we had to try and block the main gates with whatever we could find as the gap beneath the gates and the spaces between the bars of the gates are big enough for our dogs to escape straight onto the road (as they did on a number of occasions, especially when a horse and rider or other walkers passed). Maybe just some chicken wire would suffice. The entrance area into the cottage was perfect for dog owners with stone floors and closed off from the kitchen and lounge area meant they could dry off before allowing then into the cottage and a perfect sleeping area for them. Overall we enjoyed our stay at Ancient Cottage and would stay again but without the dogs due to the security of the gates.
