English Country Cottages

From a touch of luxury to characterful heritage, experience one of our truly inspiring holiday properties.

Plenty of facilities on site, including a heated swimming pool and with lovely beaches nearby, America is perfect for a family of four.

"Enjoy the ‘cream’ of Devon at one of the eleven cottages on the Ashcombe Estate..."

Situated in the heart of rolling Devon countryside, the privately owned Ashcombe country estate nestles in a peaceful valley close to the sandy beaches of Dawlish and Torquay. Enjoy walking on the estate’s hills and woodlands, swim in the heated indoor swimming pool, or relax in the sauna at Woodhouse Farm while children play in the indoor and outdoor playgrounds. The owners have made a great effort to ensure that the cottages are both comfortable and practical while the location could not be better for a wide range of Devon attractions.
It might be a family holiday or big reunion, a special celebration, a fun business get-together, a group trip, or a relaxing weekend to recharge your batteries; whatever the reason the facilities are designed to be perfect for winter and summer holidays and the secrets of the Ashcombe cottages’ appeal are presentation, comfort and convenience. The cottages are maintained to very high standards. All have leather sofas, flatscreen digital TVs and very comfortable mattresses - the owners consider a good night’s sleep the most important thing! The cottages either have Italian tiled floors or wooden floors, and some still retain many original features including oak beamed ceilings. The properties cater for almost any party size, sleeping from 4 to 28 people and are all rated either 4 or 5 stars. Ashcombe’s larger cottages provide great value for money for visitors sharing with their friends and families. For meals, an in-house chef can be booked to come and do the hard work. The heated indoor swimming pool (1 mile away) is perfect for any rainy days and keep the children happy. Cider Barn sleeping 16 and Nut Tree Farm sleeping 28, which are both 5 star rated, also have outdoor swimming pools for the summer.
For those wishing to enjoy a more adrenaline-charged holiday, the brilliant Ashcombe outdoor activity centre (at extra cost) offers quad bike safaris, clay pigeon shooting, archery, paintballing and more and is located just under a mile down the lane and is available for those 14 years and over. At the end of the day the Ashcombe Village Club provides cheap beer and a cheerful atmosphere.
Both Dartmoor National Park and the historic city of Exeter are only 20 minutes’ drive away while the famous South Devon Coast, with wonderful sandy beaches, is barely 3 miles. Exeter and Newton Abbot Racecourses, several golf courses, loads of family theme parks, zoos, sailing and fishing are all within easy reach, not to mention the many excellent pubs and restaurants that Devon is famous for. The wild beauty of Dartmoor is 20 minutes away with its abundance of wildlife and dramatic landscapes. Numerous National Trust properties are close by including Agatha Christie’s Greenway. Steam trains travel from Kingswear to Paignton and Totnes to Buckfastleigh. Visit historic Dartmouth with bustling boat harbour, castle, contemporary art galleries and boutiques. Salcombe with its beaches, sailing and water sports is also easily accessible, as well as Blackpool Sands, Slapton and picturesque Dittisham with its annual crab catching competition.

Slightly further afield, East Cornwall and the Eden Project are within an hour’s drive. Take a walk along the South West Coast Path which runs along the entire length of the Jurassic Coast and offers the walker stunning views, with a bird’s eye view of many coastal features. From the coast path you can experience the drama of sheer cliff faces, take in the wonderful towns of Beer, the ‘picture postcard’ fishing village, or Budleigh Salterton. This tranquil and historic seaside town nestles on the edge of a pebble beach beneath spectacular red cliffs, made famous by literary giants such as Noel Coward, P.G. Wodehouse and Anthony Trollope. Visit Seaton with its famous trams or Sidmouth which still has a unique charm and has captivated thousands of holidaymakers. Beautiful gardens, leisurely walks, Regency history, clean beaches and friendly shops – it is all here in this lovely seaside town. All in all Ashcombe is an excellent base to explore, experience and enjoy ‘The Cream of Devon’. Main shops 3 miles.

America Cottage was once the Woodhouse Farm dairy where the farmer, Gordon Smith, used to milk cows every day. Now, it is a lovely family-friendly cottage, overlooking the old farm courtyard, just a stone’s throw from the indoor swimming pool at Woodhouse Farm. Entrance into spacious living room. Well-equipped kitchen with dining area. Rugs on Italian-tiled floor throughout. Double bedroom with en-suite shower room with toilet and door to patio. Twin bedroom. Bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet.

We may have missed the small print but the activity centre promoted alongside this accommodation isn't suitable for children and as the property is off the beaten track there is little else to do in the local area apart from the pool or walk which is tricky when it rains. The pool is serviceable but small for the number of properties so you have to schedule your time to ensure there's space to play. The property has decent sized bedrooms and a well equipped and airy kitchen but the living room needs much more natural light and they could do with making the front door out of glass to let the light through on both sides.

We had a very enjoyable holiday but as it was early January our activities were rather limited to day time excursions to Dawlish, Teignmouth, Shaldon and Torquay. Some of the Devon lanes take careful driving.

We had 2 major issues: on the first evening the storage radiator in our bedroom dropped off the wall just inches away from my foot. On examination we could see it had been poorly fixed to the wall and looked as if it had already been repositioned. The one in the lounge also looked as if it could fall off in the near future. This caused us anxiety throughout the rest of our stay worrying that our 6 year old grandson might have one fall on him. The other issue was the toilet seat in the main bathroom which was in a disgusting state. The material (chipboard?)had obviously got wet and expanded over a period of time, the surface finish underneath had peeled exposing the bare chipboard which was probably full of dangerous bacteria. I must commend the maintenance man however who dealt with these issues immediately. But for the price we paid, we should never have had to encounter these problems.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; In response to your comments we would like to point out that the radiators are electric radiators and not storage heaters. The new electric radiators have not been repositioned, any filled in holes are from where the old night storage heaters were fixed. In the cottage books we specifically ask that no items are placed on the radiators, both from a health and safety point of view (the vents should not be covered) and because the heaters are fixed to stud walls we ask that no items are placed on them. When our maintenance man arrived at the cottage you stated that you had been putting both wet towels and his heavy dressing gown on the radiator. There are no loose radiators in the cottage. We have had no comments from previous guests regarding the toilet seat; the bathroom was only upgraded with an entire new suite 9 months ago. As soon as you mentioned that you were not happy with the toilet seat it was replaced. On departure the gentleman who dropped in the keys commented what a wonderful time he had had at Ashcombe and was hoping to book again, however our cottage questionnaire was not completed.
