I wanted peace and quiet over the Christmas period and Alstonby Hall was just right. The owners could not have been more accommodating.

Initial impression of the cottage was great - lovely well-kept grounds, easy access, spacious. Unfortunately, up close the wear and tear on the place really shows. There is significant water damage to walls and ceilings inside. Outside, the roof woodwork and guttering is starting to fall apart. Keeping the quirky solid fuel AGA going is fun in a "going back in time" kind of way, until it gets over 20 degrees outside and the entire place is instantly too hot for comfort, or until you somehow don't quite clean enough ash out of the bottom and it threatens to go out, leaving you without hot water. There is no dishwasher or washing machine (though there is clearly space for it in the kitchen or elsewhere), and the "washing service" was entirely pointless for us as the owners weren't there most of the time to ask them to do a wash for us. There is no hoover, and a "dustbuster" I found in a closet belonged in a museum - it must have been 50 years old or something. I used it once, but then did not dare use it again. The main bedroom is nice enough, but in the ensuite shower/loo the toilet seat lid is missing, which is a bit of a worry with valuables and small children around (and it is a very large, very old loo). Our little boy found the second bedroom (two singles) almost impossible to sleep in as the shutters don't shut out all the light, you still get quite a lot of road noise, it's quite draughty, and the nightly AGA noises carry into this room as well as all the other odd noises of a very old house in the night. We also had the pleasure of a nightly visit by a mouse in the master bedroom, which was very noisy and refused to be caught, so all in all the nights were not very restful at all. This was not helped by tree-trimmers arriving unannounced early in the morning in the middle of the week. Compared to other cottages we've stayed at this place is not child- or baby-friendly in the slightest. There's no cot available so we had to bring our own, and with the AGA, an open fireplace in the sitting room, exposed heating and hot water pipes and books/leaflets openly accessible to even fairly small babies (ours is 8 months) we kept dragging the cot from room to room just to keep her safe. This place really should be advertised as "not family friendly". Overall I'd really only recommend this place to childless couples looking for a back-in-time sort of camping-like experience. If you're out most of the day, including eating out (or you feel like battling the AGA, blunt knives and lack of a dishwasher), this is a useful place to rest, but it seems a waste of such a beautiful setting. This place needs a serious repair and equipment upgrades.

We enjoyed our stay but cottage was advertised as having wifi. We could only use on first day, after that there was absolutely no internet access. As a rule I read news and speak to family on skype, this was not possible here.

My husband and I really enjoyed our 5 night stay at Alstonby Hall. It is a beautiful cottage, with so much character and cosiness, surrounded by lovely gardens. We felt we were in the countryside but also not far from Carlisle city centre, the M6 motorway, Scotland and the Lake District. Jenny and Brian were the perfect hosts. We will definitely be returning!
