English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Splendid eight-bedroom manor house at the foot of the Cheviot Hills with onsite leisure facilities and large games room.

"A gracious manor and cottages of mellow stone . . . between history-steeped hills and a coast of golden sands . . ."

Standing proudly at the foot of the Cheviot Hills, on the edge of the glorious Northumberland National Park and only 15 miles from the alternating sands and rocks of the coastline, Akeld Manor cottages offer the perfect setting for a holiday in England’s fascinating and beautiful Border country. The gracious Manor House and its cluster of cottages and mellow stone buildings have been sensitively renovated and converted to create an outstanding collection of holiday properties – all with shared use of a superb choice of facilities. A leisure building houses a wide range of amenities (available daily, all the year round) which include an indoor heated swimming pool with changing and shower facilities, a Jacuzzi and sauna. There is a well-equipped multi-gym, too, and the first floor of the building features a large games room (with pool table, table tennis and football game) and a separate snooker room with full-size antique table. The cottages are set in acres of shared grounds, which offer space for relaxing and for children to play, and they lie within 2 miles of the shops and inns at Wooler.
The Northumberland National Park stretches south through Kielder and Wark Forests as far as Hadrian’s Wall, and north to the Scottish border. Long stretches of sand can be found lining the coast south of Berwick-upon-Tweed (16 miles). At Beal (13 miles), the road to Holy Island runs gently down to the shore, where it becomes a causeway covered and impassable at high tide.
These quaint cottages, some of which have originally been cartsheds and byres are charmingly set in small groups within the spacious and colourful grounds. The large Manor House (which provides accommodation for parties of 15), also has a splendid large walled garden allowing total privacy. The setting of these cosy cottages is intriguing, many with small courtyards and gardens, a truly interesting and imaginative conversion full of detail and character – the individual and tasteful interiors are delightful. Shops 2 miles.

This splendid eight-bedroom manor house was once the main house of the estate. It is set separately from the courtyard, and has its own fine walled garden. Offering spacious accommodation for up to fifteen people, it has a utility room with pool table. Entrance hall leading to large sitting room with open fire and dining room. Snug with open fire and TV. Airy farmhouse kitchen with Aga. Cloakroom with toilet. Maid’s pantry/laundry. First floor: Very large master double bedroom with (5ft bed), and sitting area with TV. Single bedroom. Nursery with two cots. Two twin bedrooms. Two further double bedrooms, one with four-poster bed (5ft). Two bathrooms with toilet, one with bidet. Large shower room with toilet. The manor house is very old fashioned and needs updating. When you first enter the house it has a very fusty smell. This house would be good for a haunted weekend as it is very spooky the children would not go around the house on their own even the adults were a bit put out. We were expecting a luxury cottage and it was far from that. We were very disappointed.

Response on behalf of the owner; Thank you for your comments. We feel that maybe this period property situated in the Northumberland National Park was not suitable for these guests. The location is clearly defined in all advertising and never changes – a delightful location in open countryside in an area recognised to be that of outstanding National beauty, a clear description of the beautiful area of location and guests can see this prior to booking so that they can determine if it is right for them or not. Regarding local amenities, in rural Northumberland you would find everything one could expect for such a location and more. Holy Island, castles, historic buildings, museums a fantastic coast line, boat trips, wild life, untold miles of walking and exploring. Cleanliness is something for which we have an outstanding record as can be evidenced from our other reviews. The comfort, furnishing, heating are all excellent. We are puzzled as to why these guests were expecting a luxury cottage as our property is an eight bedroom Period Manor House and has a 3 star grading. We can confirm there is no smell as one enters the Manor House at all of any nature.

The property was accurately described and the cooking facilitiesetc were very good . But we were a large party and would have preferred a property with either ensuite accommodation or more showers (only one in the property) The bathrooms were large and plenty of room for their installation or even over the bath ones would have been better. Whilst the property was very clean and there is plenty of space we were a little put off by the itemised last of charges for anything broken , the charge for using the pool table inside the property and the compulsory charge for the leisure facilities whether used or not.

Great location, lovely big house but very dated and scrimpingly equipped

Fantastic house in a great location. The house was excellent for our needs (13x 20, 30, 40 and 50 somethings celebrating a birthday). The house has lots of entertaining space including a spare utility room used only for storing alcohol. The extra charges for the use of swimming pool, snooker are a touch annoying (I believe this should be within the overall rental price). There's a cost for coal and wood which in other rentals has been free. The pool table is coin operated, however the owner did supply plenty of tea towels :) . Bring your own cue if you have one. Surrounding area is beautiful. Would recommend.
