Description

A light and airy family property, one of a pair, set between the Cheviots and the coast.

These light and airy properties are set between the Cheviot Hills and the Northumberland Coast on the edge of the National Park. Milfield Hill Steading stands in an elevated position; once part of a large country estate dating back to the 1750s, it was owned by the Grey family until 1967 and was the birthplace of the social reformer Josephine Butler. There are the medieval ruins of Etal and Dunstanburgh, Bamburgh and Alnwick Castles, Holy Island and the Farne Islands to explore. North Northumberland coastline (AONB) offers long, uncrowded, sandy beaches, fishing villages and seaside resorts. The Cheviots’ ‘rounded hills’ and the Pennine Way offer a challenging terrain. Cycling, horse riding, golf and bird-watching nearby. Village shop and pub/restaurant ½ mile.

Level entrance through side door to first floor: Large open-plan living room with multi-fuel stove and spacious well-equipped kitchen/dining area. Ground floor: Large double bedroom with 6ft bed. Twin bedroom. Bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet.

We had a fantastic week in Northumberland. The cottage is lovely, well equipped, clean and comfortable. The location was great and not far from lots of interesting and beautiful places to visit; Bamburgh Castle and sands, Alnwick Castle, Cragside House, Kelso Abbey and Coldstream to name a few. The cottage is a little walk down a dark country road to the pub so we went by car on the night's we went out. We ate at The Blue Bell Inn; very nice Sunday lunch and a very tasty last night supper in the local, The Red Lion. It would have been a nice touch of they would have left a small carton of milk for when we got there. We had travelled a long way and were really ready for a cuppa by the time we arrived but had to go out again to Wooler (5 mile away) to get shopping as the "convenience" store in the village wasn't open (in fact it never seemed to be open!) These were only very small niggles though and we had a lovely stay overall. Thank you

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you for your comments, with regard to the village store, there seems to be some confusion. The village store did close some time ago; however emergency provisions can be purchased from the Northern Traders Country Store, which is open every day from 9am, half day Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. However, supermarkets providing a more extensive range of products can be found in Wooler, Alnwick and Berwick. I have updated the information I send out to every visitor.

A high quality cottage that all the family enjoyed (two boys aged 7 and 5) for both the location and the quality of the accommodation.
