Les Eyzies de Tayac with its National Museum of Prehistory is also close by and offers opportunities for exploring the shelters that were once home to prehistoric man. There are many water sports facilities in the area, especially at the charming village of Trémolat and in the 7-hectare park of Les Etang du Bois. The nearby pony club allows parents to accompany their children on country rides. Further afield is the historic town of Bergerac with its wine making traditions and the medieval market town of Sarlat. The whole area is steeped in historic villages, magnificent châteaux, oak and chestnut forests, fields of tobacco, maize and sunflowers.

    The town of Looe is situated around a small harbour and along the steep-sided valley of the river Looe, which flows between east and west Looe to the sea beside a sandy beach. Off shore to the west, opposite the stonier Hannafore Beach, lays the picturesque St George’s Island, commonly known as Looe Island. Polperro is situated on the River Pol, 4 miles west of the neighbouring town of Looe, it is well-known for its idyllic location, surrounded by tightly packed old fishermen’s houses which makes it attractive to tourists, particularly in the summer months.
    Days out include Carnglaze Caverns, three caverns of cathedral proportions, hand created by local slate miners. During your tour you will go 150 metres into the hillside and 60 metres below ground, via a flight of 60 steps. In the lower chambers you will find the subterranean lake with its crystal clear blue/green water. Fowey is situated on the south coast of Cornwall between Looe and Mevagissey. It is not only an historic town, but also a commercial seaport. Over the centuries Fowey has grown and now stretches for about a mile along the west bank of the River Fowey to the mouth of the river.

Magnificent Flamborough Head with its bird sanctuary is 18 miles. The historic sea port of Whitby (25 miles), where the legendary Captain Cook learned his trade, has a beautiful new marina. The old town is a jumble of narrow streets, with ancient houses and little craft shops, and above the town, high on a headland, are the jagged ruins of Whitby Abbey, still an impressive sight.
    Inland is the market town of Malton, where a museum houses finds from the Roman camp which once stood here. Five miles to the west, Castle Howard, one of England’s grandest houses, is well worth a visit. Surrounded by magnificent parkland, it contains fine furniture and paintings, as well as Britain’s largest private collection of dress from the 17th-century to the present day. The attractive town of Pickering at the southern foot of the moors, is home to the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway, which travels across Heartbeat country. The city of York can be reached in an hour or so, with its superb museums, excellent shops and splendid minster. Flamingo Land and Ayton Castle are also nearby. There is an excellent golf course at Ganton (2 miles) and first-class riding stables at Snainton (7 miles). Good pubs and restaurants can be found in the surrounding villages.
