Knockerdown Farm is conveniently situated on the road between Ashbourne and Matlock, within walking distance of beautiful Carsington Water, a superb windsurfing and sailing centre, which has an area devoted to wildlife and nature conservancy. Throughout the year they have special fun days for children of all ages. At the water sports centre guests can hire (with tuition) kayaks, windsurfers, Canadian canoes and bicycles. Professional fly fishing is available to enable guests to try their hand at fishing this popular, well-stocked reservoir. Fine walking country is virtually on the doorstep, and the renowned Tissington and Middleton cycle trails are both close by (with bikes available to hire). The principal centres of the Derbyshire Dales are nearby - Wirksworth, the market town of Ashbourne, attractive Bakewell (of pudding fame) and Matlock: all are fascinating ancient towns. Matlock Bath (6 miles) is popular as an inland resort, standing on the River Derwent amid lovely scenery, and offering boating, angling, bowls, tennis and cricket. The young (and the young at heart) will enjoy a day out at the National Tramway Museum - where visitors may enjoy the fun experience of trams from around the world! Magnificent Chatsworth House (16 miles) boasts a famous collection of art treasures as well as beautiful gardens. Haddon Hall (13 miles) is England’s most complete and authentic medieval house dating back to the 14th century. It is set in lovely countryside overlooking the River Wye, near Bakewell, which houses one of the National Park’s information centres. One of Britain’s premier theme parks, Alton Towers is within easy reach.     Recreational possibilities include: 21 golf courses included in the Freedom of the Fairways Passport; walking, whether gently through woods and alongside rivers and towns, or on the more challenging Southern Upland and St Cuthbert’s Ways; cycling for all abilities on quiet local roads, on the many great cycle routes nearby or try some downhill trails at Glentress Forest, Peebles (cycle store available at the properties); or have fun on their Go Ape tree top adventure course; fishing for salmon and trout on the River Tweed and its tributaries, or on stocked lochs for trout and coarse fish. Guests have shared use of the owner’s swimming pool by arrangement. The Coach House is ideally placed for leisurely walks, as Hastings Country Park borders the property and offers 660 acres of dramatic headland and cliff-tops with most of the park designated as a Special Conservation Area and Site of Special Scientific Interest. Areas of the park are also known as ‘The Firehills’ which date back to the days of smuggling when contraband was landed and brought inland via a series of tunnels to local cottages! The views from here are stunning; enjoy views east over the Dungeness marshes to Hythe, and looking south on a sunny day, guests can enjoy views of the French coast. The closest beach is just 2 miles away, offering several miles of walking or cycling along the sea defence walls. The surrounding lowlands attract wildfowl and waterbirds providing an opportunity for some excellent bird watching. The cosmopolitan town of Hastings is approximately 5 miles away, home to Europes largest beach launched fishing fleet and the filming of the TV series Foyles War. Rye, 5 miles, is a maze of cobbled streets that have been a haven for artists and writers, its illustrious former residents include Henry James and H.G Wells. Camber offers miles of golden sand dunes, and Battle, not only the site of one of the most famous encounters in history but also home to a large gunpowder works, which kept British ships loaded throughout the Napoleonic Wars and most likely supplied the powder used in the Guy Fawkes gunpowder plot!
