In a totally secluded setting at the end of a third of a mile of private drive, with panoramic views of the sea and Quantock Hills, Periton Park Court is surrounded by 30 acres of its own gardens, pasture and woodland with direct access to the Exmoor National Park. There is also the use of a heated outdoor pool, open from May to September. Periton Park Court provides a gateway to the Exmoor National Park. A fenced track that crosses fields to the south provides direct access to the park. It is a perfect playground for walkers, mountain bikers and horse riders. For the adventurous mountain biker, there are tracks prepared by local enthusiasts in the woods just south of Periton - be prepared as it’s not flat! If you haven’t yet discovered Exmoor, you are in for a treat. It is the undiscovered corner of the south west with quiet country lanes and uncrowded beauty spots even in the busy July/August months. Those that have discovered Exmoor return again and again. For beach lovers there are a number of beaches within a short distance, Minehead Beach/Harbour 1.5 miles, Dunster Beach 3 miles, Blue Anchor Beach 5 miles and Porlock Weir Harbour/Beach 5 miles. The famous surfing beaches at Woolacombe and Croyde are approximately 90 minutes west by car on roads with some spectacular scenery to view as you cross Exmoor. If your food supplies are running low, pick up some holiday essentials at the convenience store in Mawgan Porth Village, or dine at Jamie Oliver’s ’Fifteen’ restaurant at Watergate Bay, or Rick Stein’s Seafood Café at Padstow.

    Cornwall has plenty of family attractions, and is also well-known for arts, culture, history, heritage, gardens, food, drink, film, TV and literature. Beaches in the local area, Watergate Bay, and the surf beaches of Newquay, lie within five miles along the coast road southwards, and the seven bays and beaches of St Merryn and Padstow are 10 miles to the north. Further afield, the beaches of Marazion, St Ives, Sennen, Kynance Cove, Falmouth, Perranporth and Porthcurno are among the top ten in the county (according to the Cornwall Guide). Even if the weather is poor, do what the locals do - wrap up warm, take a brisk walk in the wind, watch the waves crash on the rocks and let the Cornish sea air blow the cobwebs away!

    Other attractions including the educational Eden Project and Healey’s Cornish Cyder Farm, are not far away. Cornwall is steeped in myths, legends and folklore, from ‘piskies’ and ’faeries’ to kings and castles.     Kinmount Castle has access to exclusive salmon beats on the Rivers Annan and Nith including the famous Barjarg beat that boasts a salmon catch of 67 lb, in 1812, by well-known poacher, Jock Wallace, and confirmed by the Earl of the home. More up to date catches are now giving an average of 59 salmon and 160 sea trout in a a season along this two mile beat. One to one fishing tuition can also be arranged for novices.     Just 2 miles from the cottages is Powfoot, created in the 1790s as a sea-bathing resort by one of the owners of Kinmount House. Set above a beach, it has an excellent golf course, one of several along this coast. About a mile further on, the river at the redstone town of Annan is famous for its salmon, sea trout and brown trout fishing, and there are pleasant walks along both banks. The town boasts a choice of restaurants and pubs, as well as a sports centre. At Ecclefechan (6 miles) Thomas Carlyle’s birthplace is to be found, containing a collection of relics and letters. Rammerscales (8 miles) is a Georgian house linked with Flora MacDonald. Along the coast at Caerlaverock (8 miles), 13,000 acres of salt-marsh and foreshore have been designated a National Nature Reserve; barnacle, pink-footed and greylag geese feeding on the saltings in Autumn and Winter make this one of the most notable bird sanctuaries in Britain. Overlooking the reserve from a wooded mound are the striking red sandstone ruins of Caerlaverock Castle, dating from the 13th century and besieged many times during the Border wars.
    In the parish church at Ruthwell, the Ruthwell cross is a most impressive example of 7th-century stone carving, inscribed with verses from The Dream of the Rood. Dumfries (13 miles) is renowned for its Burns museum, and has a fine golf course. Further west are quaint fishing villages and the rugged beauty of the Galloway Hills. The area offers opportunities for sailing, water sports and riding, and the nearby towns offer good shopping and a variety of inns and eating places. Shops 3 miles.
