The Lake District is one of the UK’s favourite holiday destinations – and with good reason. The beautiful landscape is loved by hikers, wild swimmers and cyclists alike, while the glassy lakes are picturesque and peaceful all year round.
Coastal cottages in the Lake District offer one of the best way to experience these iconic surroundings. Whether you are overlooking a lake, or out by the coast in a seaside cottage, there is something so relaxing about being next to the water. In fact, Cumbria and the Lakes have inspired poets and writers such as William Wordsworth, Beatrix Potter, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Thomas de Quincey.
While most visitors head straight for hotspots such as Lake Windermere or Ullswater, it is well worth venturing out to the western edges of the Lake District, where you will find some of the most beautiful beaches in England. Cottages by the sea are perfect for birdwatching (St Bees hosts one of the largest bird colonies in the UK), water sports, cycling and hiking, as well as long romantic strolls along Cumbria’s endless beaches. Silecroft Beach is one of the highlights of the coast, with miles of shingle and sands, while the eerie salt marshes at Solway Firth have inspired hundreds of ghost stories and (alleged) UFO sightings over the years. You might not spot a spaceship while you’re there, but on a clear night keep an eye out for shooting stars in the sky above your sea view cottage.
If you’re after a more traditional seaside holiday, don’t miss the sandy flats of Morecambe Bay, and the many excellent seafood restaurants nearby where you can sample freshly-caught local oysters and mussels direct from the sea to your plate. Whatever you end up doing, coastal holiday cottages will show you a side of the Lake District that you didn’t even realise existed.
